We have begun a relationship with Chicago Uptown Ministries by serving meals once a month to 50 adults in the surrounding community. Thus far, there has been a huge interest with over 25 volunteers already participating. We are serving meals once a month, but this may increase in frequency as we get more volunteers. Generally 10 volunteers or so are required for each meal. What do Volunteers do? Volunteers set up tables, chairs, apply tableclothes, organize kitchen, etc. Volunteers are asked to provide various parts of the meal, including a main course (meat/casserole), vegetable, bread, and deserts. Drinks, (milk, lemonade, coffee) cups, napkins, plates, and silverware are also required. It is best to bring your own pitchers, and serving utensils, as ChUM has little resources in the kitchen. We lead a prayer with all of our guests prior to eating. Volunteers then start an assembly line to fill plates and then take them out to the guests, as though they were being served at a restaurant. 2 volunteers are needed to serve drinks, while the others provide plates of food. Once all the guests have been served, the volunteers are encouraged to sit and eat with the guests and have time for fellowship. Following clean up of plates, a game (bingo is provided by ChUM) can be played, with prizes ($5 gift cards, or other appropriate gifts, provided by us). This is optional. Usually volunteers are able to leave after about 3 hours, after ensuring that the kitchen and serving areas are returned to pre-meal condition. Someone from the mission team will always be available to answer questions and provide guidance with meal organization. Thank you again for your participation in this worthy cause. |
